CAF Champions League: Nigeria’s representatives Enyimba, Remo Stars crash out

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Enyimba FC and Remo Stars have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League (CAF CL).

Enyimba were eliminated following a goalless draw with Libya’s Al-Ahly Benghazi in Aba on Sunday.

Enyimba needed to win by a lone goal to progress to the second preliminary round. However, the People’s Elephant failed to deliver the needed result at home.

The Nigerian side had lost the first leg in Libya 3-4 last week. However, Nigerian fans had high hopes that Finidi George’s charges will overturn the deficit in Aba.

Al-Ahly Benghazi stood resolute throughout an encounter that was largely dominated by the home team. Unfortunately, the two-time CAF Champions will not be featuring in the next preliminary round.

Meanwhile, another Nigerian representative in the CAF Champions League Remo Stars have crashed out as well.

Although the Ikenne-based outfit beat Ghanaian club Medeama SC 1-0 and drew 1-1 on aggregate, the Sky Blue Stars went on to lose 3-2 on penalties.

Medeama had beaten Remo 1-0 in Ghana just a week ago and were on the right track today when they equalised on aggregate in the 72nd minute.

However, Coach Daniel Ogunmodede’s side could not get the better of their Ghanaian opponents in the shootout.

Both Enyimba and Remo Star are now out. Meanwhile Rivers United and Bendel Insurance, representing Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup, are still very much alive in the competition.
