African football is poised for a major structural shift following a bold announcement from CAF president Patrice Motsepe. He revealed plans for a brand-new African Nations League designed to deliver elite competition every single year.

The tournament will officially launch in 2029 and run annually between September and November. Interestingly, it will involve all 54 CAF member associations across the continent.

Under the new format, nations will be divided into four geographical zones. The Northern zone will feature six teams, while Eastern, Western, Central, and Southern zones will each include 16 nations.Group matches will take place in September and October.

Thereafter, regional champions will advance to a decisive finals stage in November.

Motsepe described the competition as the equivalent of hosting an Africa Cup of Nations every year. Furthermore, the tournament will be staged in partnership with FIFA to secure elite commercial backing.

According to Motsepe, the timing ensures Africa’s best players will be available. As a result, Europe-based stars are expected to return home annually.

“Every year, the best African players will be with us on the continent,” he said. That promise indicates a major boost for competitiveness and global visibility.

The CAF president believes the Nations League will redefine African football’s calendar. Ultimately, it aims to deliver a consistent, world-class product that elevates the continent’s global standing.
