CAP-A announces Osinbajo as new Chair Board of the Directors


Former Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo will be leading The Climate Action for Africa (CAP-A) as the new Chair of the Board of Directors. 

Osinbajo via his X (formerly Twitter) disclosed that he was excited to drive climate action across Africa alongside an incredible team.

He tweeted: “Thrilled to announce that I have accepted the offer to lead The Climate Action for Africa (CAP-A) as the new Chair of the Board of Directors! Truly excited to drive climate action across Africa alongside an incredible team.”

Meanwhile CAP-A in a statement said Osinbajo’s appointment took immediate effect, having witnessed their work in shifting the global and continental narrative from Africa being a victim of the climate crisis to holding the key to accelerating global climate action.

The statement read: “For immediate release, September 26th, 2023 The Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP A) warmly welcomes H.E. Prof Yemi Osinbajo SAN to the Board of Directors as Chair, with immediate effect. Prof. Osinbajo is the immediate past Vice President of Nigeria having served two four year terms from 2015.

“We are deeply honored to have Prof Osinbajo join the CAP A Board of Directors as Chair to assist with the next phase of our growth and our mission of unlocking Africa’s potential as a global hub for climate action,” said CAP A Founder James Mwangi.

“His vast experience and passion for transforming African countries’ economies in harmony with climatic needs, will be invaluable to CAP A’s mission, especially coming out of the inaugural Africa Climate Summit that made a strong push for accelerated climate action.

“Prof. Osinbajo said, “Since the recent founding of CAP A, has witnessed their work in shifting the global and continental narrative from Africa being a victim of the climate crisis to holding the key to accelerating global climate action. I’m honored to join the Board of Directors as Chair in support of CAP A’s teams and programs across the continent, and in realizing Africa’s economic development through Climate Positive Growth.

“In addition to serving eight years as Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Osinbajo previously served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State. An accomplished lawyer, Prof. Osinbajo attained the distinguished rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He is one of Nigeria’s leading legal experts and has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Public Law at the University of Lagos. 

“During his time in public service, Prof. Osinbajo was involved in various government initiatives and policies, including economic reforms, social intervention programs, and efforts to address access to justice and energy security in African states. He chaired the Inter-Ministerial Energy Transition Group, overseeing the development and delivery of the Nigeria Energy Transition Plan in 2022. 

“He also led the implementation of Nigeria’s Economic Sustainability Plan which featured the rollout of 5 million new off grid solar connections to rural communities. His dedication to this cause extends beyond his time in office as he continues to champion climate action initiatives, not only within Climate Action Nigeria but also across the African continent and globally.
