CBN assures public: No license revocation planned for Unity, Polaris, Keystone banks

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has moved to dispel rumors circulating online regarding the potential revocation of licenses for Unity Bank, Polaris Bank, and Keystone Bank. In a statement issued on social media platforms, the CBN declared the claims “fake and not from the CBN.”

This announcement comes after the CBN revoked the operating license of Heritage Bank on June 4th, citing the bank’s inability to improve its financial performance. The online rumors likely stemmed from this action, causing concern among depositors of the other three banks.

Reassuring the Public

The CBN’s swift public clarification aims to reassure customers of Unity, Polaris, and Keystone Banks. This action highlights the importance of clear communication from regulatory bodies to maintain public trust and stability within the financial sector.

Focus on Heritage Bank

While the CBN focuses on managing the situation with Heritage Bank, the future of the institution remains uncertain. The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has been appointed as the liquidator, and the process of repaying depositors is underway.

Maintaining Financial Stability

The CBN’s actions, including revoking Heritage Bank’s license and clarifying the status of the other three banks, demonstrate their commitment to safeguarding financial stability in Nigeria. They aim to ensure a healthy banking system that fosters public confidence.

Uncertainties Remain

While the immediate concern surrounding Unity, Polaris, and Keystone Banks has been addressed, questions linger about the long-term health of the Nigerian banking sector. The CBN’s handling of the Heritage Bank situation and its future regulatory actions will be closely monitored in the coming months.
