Champions League: Chelsea take control; Villareal held Juve


European champions Chelsea have taken over the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie against Lille, with a 2-0 win.

Kai Havertz, who led the attack in place of out-of-form Romelu Lukaku headed in an early opener.

Although Lille grew into the game as the first half wore on but Christian Pulisic made it 2-0 midway through the second half with a cool finish.

Lukaku has been out of form recently. The striker who joined the Blues for £97.5m currently struggles in front of goal.

Chelsea will now look to complete their passage to the quarter-finals when they head to the home of the French champions for the second leg on Wednesday, 16 March.

Vlahovic scores on Juve debut

Meanwhile, Juventus’s new signing, Dusan Vlahovic needed a few seconds to open his Champions League account. The Serbian striker scored the quickest Champions League debut goal ever but Juventus were pegged back to draw at Villarreal in the last 16 first leg.

Vlahovic who recently joined the Old Lady for £58m from Fiorentina last month, ran onto Danilo’s long ball before a swivel and clever finish after 32 seconds.

Villarreal later restored parity through Dani Parejo ghosted finish from Etienne Capoue’s aerial ball.
