2019/20 UEFA Champions League: Who do you fancy?


The Champions League is scheduled to return tonight and in this article, NRTC’s Oladipupo Mojeed analyse the chances of the remaining big clubs left in the competition.

The UEFA Champions League was suspended indefinitely in March, because of the Coronavirus outbreak, and with four of the eight rounds of 16 ties concluded.

UEFA Champions League quarter-final, semi-final and final draws

The draw for the last eight, semifinals and finals was completed on the 10th of July. At the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

The Uefa Executive Committee decided that all the remaining second-leg fixtures will be played at the home team’s stadium.

This applies where clubs are currently playing the remaining matches of their domestic leagues in their own stadiums; and that travelling is possible without restrictions for the visiting clubs.

Champions League draw in full

Quarter-finals:

Real Madrid or Manchester City vs Lyon or Juventus

RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid

Barcelona or Napoli vs Chelsea or Bayern Munich

Atalanta vs PSG

*Ties are one-leg only and will take place in Lisbon from August 12-15.

Semi-finals:

Real Madrid, Manchester City, Lyon or Juventus vs Napoli, Barcelona, Chelsea or Bayern Munich

RB Leipzig or Atletico Madrid vs Atalanta or PSG

*Ties are one-leg only and will take place in Lisbon from August 18-19.

Bayern Munich

Newly crowned Bundesliga champions; Bayern Munich have a 3-0 lead over Chelsea from the first leg played at Stamford Bridge, before the coronavirus outbreak.

Bayern look in cruise control as they go into the second leg. The newly crowned Bundesliga champions are bookmakers favourite to go through in the second leg.

Barcelona

Barcelona are the favourites to go through against Napoli. After the first leg ended in a 1-1 draw in Italy. Quique Setien’s men are capable of finishing the job at the Camp Nou.

PSG

PSG qualified for the last eight of the Champions League. After beating Borussia Dortmund 3 – 2 in the first leg of the Champions League second round.

Iago Gaperini’s men are having the season of their lives. After almost securing a dramatic win against Serie A leaders, Juventus in a league clash.

The return fixture against Atalanta is expected to be a tough one for the Paris club; who over the years has invested a lot of money to enable them win the Champions League.

Juventus

Five times world footballer of the year. Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to face his former club; Real Madrid in the last eight of the competition.

The faith of the Bianconerri is still hanging on a thread, after suffering a 1-0 loss in the first leg in France.

Juventus who just won the Serie A title, will hope to use the momentum gained in the fight to win Serie A as motivation to overturn the second leg result in their favour.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid on the other hand are scheduled to travel to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg of their clash with City. After losing to Pep Guardiola’s men at the Bernabeu Stadium.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg. Real Madrid would have to score two unreplied goals, to even have a chance of progressing to the next round.

Manchester City

City has been boosted after successfully appealing a two-year UEFA European ban. And will be hoping for a successful campaign in the Champions League after losing to Arsenal in the English FA Cup by 2 – 0. In their quest to win a double this season.

Atletico Madrid

After sending the defending champions, Liverpool packing from the tournament, Atletico Madrid has been drawn against Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig.

The trophy has been eluding Diego Simone’s men after being in the final on two occasions. Having sent the defending champions packing, they will be aiming to try one more time.
