Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has expressed frustration after his team’s dramatic Champions League exit at the hands of Inter Milan.
The Catalans were edged out 4-3 in a rollercoaster second leg at the San Siro, bowing out 7-6 on aggregate. Although Barcelona showed remarkable fight, their hopes were dashed by Inter’s late heroics.
Inter stormed into a 2-0 lead in the first half courtesy of goals by Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu, the Turk’s being from the spot after the former was fouled by Pau Cubarsi in the box.

However, the Spanish giants fought back courageously, levelling at 2-2 before taking the lead late in normal time. Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo repaid Barça’s persistent attacks with two goals six minutes apart before Raphinha fired into the net three minutes before the end of regulation time to give the Spanish giants the lead and a sight at the final.

Yet, heartbreak followed as Inter found an injury-time equaliser via 37-year-old veteran defender Francesco Acerbi. The home side then struck again in extra-time with a fantastic curling effort by substitute Davide Frattesi to book a place in their second final in three seasons.
While the game thrilled neutrals, Barcelona’s camp was left fuming over decisions made by referee Szymon Marciniak. Flick suggested that many of the key moments favored Inter but avoided directly blaming the officials.
“Some decisions were 50-50 and they have always gone to Inter. That’s football. We have to accept it. I’m very proud of my team,” he said after the match.
The German manager was clearly disappointed but chose to stay focused on his team’s valiant efforts rather than dive too deeply into controversy. “Sometimes you think that some of the referee’s decisions are unfair. But we have to accept it and start again next season,” he added.

Pride and determination for next season
Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Flick’s pride in his squad was unmistakable. He applauded the players for their relentless spirit and was quick to underline their dedication on the night. “I’m disappointed but not with the players and their performance. They tried everything and that’s just the way it is,” he stated, reflecting on the evening’s drama.
The Barcelona boss reaffirmed that winning the Champions League remains a major objective for the club. He promised fans that the team will come back stronger next season, ready to challenge Europe’s best once again. “We are out but next year we will try again and try to make the whole club and the fans happy,” Flick vowed.
In praising Inter Milan, Flick acknowledged their strength and tactical discipline, recognizing their impressive defensive organization and potent attacking threat. He noted, “Inter also play and are a great team. They defend very well and have good strikers.” His comments highlighted mutual respect between the two European powerhouses.
As the dust settles, Flick believes there are valuable lessons to take forward. He emphasized the importance of growth and learning, even after painful defeats. “We will learn. It’s a progression. We want to keep learning,” he noted, stressing the team’s commitment to continuous improvement despite a packed schedule.
Although Barcelona’s dream ended at the semi-final stage, their journey this season has rekindled hope among supporters. With Flick at the helm, the Spanish giants seem determined to turn frustration into fuel for future success.
