Champions League: Madrid brush aside Chelsea; Milan advance at Napoli’s expense


Real Madrid sailed into the semi-finals of the Champions League after beating Chelsea 2-0 on Tuesday night and 4-0 on aggregate while AC Milan beat Napoli 2-1 in two legs to seal a last four berth.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were hoping to overturn a two-goal deficit after losing to Madrid 2-0 in the first leg.

Their hopes were dashed when Brazilian forward Rodrygo scored two minutes before the hour mark to make the tie 3-0.

The 22-year-old grabbed his second of the night 10 minutes before the end of the game after being setup by Federico Valverde.

Chelsea didn’t help themselves as they missed a number of chances to get themselves back into the tie.

French midfielder N’Golo Kante fluffed his lines when presented with a glorious chance in the first half. Marc Cucurella also saw his effort blocked when he looked almost certain to find the back of the net.

It was another night of absolute disappointment for Chelsea in what has been a below par season.

Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti’s quest for an historic fifth Champions League title win as a coach continues. Real Madrid will now face either Manchester City or Bayern Munich in the semi-final.

Since being appointed interim boss following the sack of Graham Potter, Frank Lampard has recorded four defeats from four games.

AC Milan 1-1 Napoli (Agg: 2-1)

In the other quarter-final match of the day, AC Milan drew 1-1 but overcame Victor Osimhen’s Napoli 2-1 on aggregate to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The important victory means Milan reach the semi-final of the Champions League for the first time since winning the competition in 2007.

Interestingly, Stefano Pioli’s side could face Inter Milan in the last four, as the Nerazzurri go into Wednesday’s second leg with Benfica holding a 2-0 lead.

Napoli dominated the early exchanges but Milan won a penalty which was missed by France’s all-time top scorer Olivier Giroud.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker however put the visitors ahead on the night after tapping in the ball. The goal came about after a fantastic 70-yard run by Rafael Leao to set up Giroud.

Late in the second half, Napoli had the opportunity to get back into the game when Fikayo Tomori handled in the box. However Mike Maignan dived well to save Georgian Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s penalty.

The Naples side finally got a goal of theirs via talismanic striker Victor Osimhen with only seconds of the match remaining. The Nigerian striker, who is also the current Serie A top scorer, was unavailable for the first leg through injury.
