1. 300: Rise of an Empire

This movie is one of the classical movies that goes back in time to explain history in viewing medium. Though, this movie is not fully historical, it still draws references from the history of Greece.

300: Rise of an Empire is a follow up to 300 that was released in 2006. The sequel was based solely on Xerxes by Frank Miller but Zack Snyder was a pioneer in the screenplay writing. On March 7, 2014, 300: Rise of an Empire was released theatrically with a budget of $110 million but the box office grossing was $337.6 million. The Warner Bros. Pictures produced movie rates 6.2/10 on IMDb.

2. Divergent

The year 2014 exposed us to dystopian science fiction and the Divergent movie is one of the forerunners in that course of film making. Shailene Woodley and Theo James acted in a masterpiece that we would never forget. Divergent was adapted from a 2011 novel of the same title by Neil Burner. With a budget of $85 million, it grossed $288.9 million in Box Office.

This movie is the first in the Divergent series and was released on March 18, 2014. What happens when everyone is gouped into factions according to their ability? Each faction contribute towards the survival of the people in post- apocalyptic Chicago. But what happens if you do not belong to any group, you’re different, hence, you’re a divergent.

3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

We have had masterpieces from Marvel and this one is not an exception. In the year 2014, Marvel Cinematic Universe fed our eyes fat with bespoke movies and Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the first.

This movie is a sequel to the 2011 Captain America: The First Avenger. On April 7, 2014, MCU released the movie theatrically. Captain America: The Winter Soldier featured Marvel superhero characters such as Black Widow and the Falcon. The Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes proved indomitable all through the movie. As a result, it was a battle between him and some of the Avengers team till the end.

Thw movie was made with a budget of $170-177 million dollars but did so well in Box office amassing a total of $714.4 million. IMDb rates the movie as a 7.7/10.

4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

On May 2, 2014, Marvel released another sequel in the Spiderman franchise featuring Andrew Garfield as Spiderman. This movie is notable because of the tragic death of Gwen Stacy. MCU lovers will never forget this movie.

Watching the trailer, I remember the excitement that brewed in me when watching the movie. In this sequel, it felt like it was Spiderman against all the world’s villain. There was a pointer that the movie would end up being tragic. Andrew Garfield will forever be my favourite Spiderman actor. His chemistry with Emma Stone in the movie was distinct.

This sequel also featured the Marvel villain, Electro played by Jamie Foxx. The movie was generally a success because it had about $180-190 million as movie budget and ended up amassing $709.7 million in Box office. It was the ninth highest grossing film of 2024. However, IMDb rates it as 6.6/10.

5. X- Men: Days of the Future Past

Come and see another of MCU wonders. 2014 was really the year, three MCU movies in just the first half of the year. X- Men: Days of the Future Past is the fifth instalment featuring X-Men, the Marvel comic superhero team. And who doesn’t love the X- Men? You, I bet no!

May 22, 2014 ushered us into receiving another of MCU’s goodness. This sequel featured time travel and unlike the belief that DC is the god of time travel, Marvel has been in the game of time travel for long.

With a grossing amount of $746 million in Box Office, X-Men:Day of the Future Past was the sixth- highest grossing film of 2014. It rates a 7.9/10 on IMDb.

6. The Fault In Our Stars

In the league of tragic love stories, The Fault in our stars is in a league of its own. The movie starts on a light note and leaves you on a tear-jerking note. Oh my gosh! I did not just drop spoilers. It is based on John Green ‘s book of the same title, an American story of coming to age. The Fault In Our Stars was released on June 6, 2014.

Fortunately, the trailer leaves you smiling, blushing and gushing like you’re Hazel Grace. Augustus Waters is such a sweet talker. This movie is a must watch. If you believe in love, what are you waiting for? IMDb rates it as a 7.7/10. From a sum of $12 million movie budget, it amassed a whopping sum of $307.2 million in Box Office.

Hazel and Gus are teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especially “An Imperial Affliction”, so they embark on a journey to visit an author in Amsterdam.’- IMDb.

7. The Maze Runner

I think it was The Maze Runner franchise that commissioned Dylan O’ Brien as a dystopian star. After featuring in the Maze Runner franchise, fast forward to 2020 when he was in Love and Monsters movie.

The Maze Runner is the first sequel in the Maze Runner franchise. It is an adaptation of James Dashner’s 2009 novel of the same title. The American science fiction directed by Wes Ball was released on September 19, 2014. The 20th century studios produced movie worth gained $348.3 million in Box Office from its $34 million movie budget.

8. The Equalizer

The movie somehow resonates with the John Wick franchise. Just like the John Wick character, McCall is forced to get back to his action life because of a misdoing. As we all know, Denzel Washington lives in his character, he played his role effectively. The movie was able to gain $192.3 million in Box Office.

Adapting Gillian Flynn’s psychological thriller book into a movie was one of the best things that happened in Hollywood in 2014. This movie fully portrays the meaning of the saying, “Fear women”. Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck ‘s acting prowess really brought the Flynn’s book to life on our screen.

Gone Girl received so many nominations and currently holds 64 wins in different categories for different film awards. It rates an 8.1/10 on IMDb and the Box Office worth is $370.9 million.

10. Interstellar

What is the credibility of this list if it doesn’t future Christopher Nolan’s movie of 2014, Interstellar. The Nolan brothers wrote the screenplay of this movie and it was like the movie of 2014. It has an impressive IMDb rating of 8.7/10.

Interstellar bagged the Academy Award for Best Visuals. It made an awesome sum of $705.2 million in Box Office. It follows suit in being dystopian like some other movies released in 2014.

Big Hero 6 is based on Marvel Comic characters and the storyline is like a foreteller of the future- Robots and AI. With an impressive rating of 7.8/10 on IMDb, it amassed $657.8 million in Box Office. It was released on November 7, 2024.

12. Kingsman: The Secret Service

Kingsman: The Secret Service is the first installment in the Kingsman franchise. It is adapted from a comic book series of the same name by Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons. It starts Samuel L. Jackson, Taron Egerton amongst other incredible stars.

This movie is a blend of action glazed with comedy, one feature all the movie in this franchise has. Taron Egerton’s character, Eggsy was a blend of everything, innit. It was released on 13 December, 2014. IMDb rates it as a 7.7/10.
