Chelle targets fast start as Super Eagles open AFCON 2025 campaign against Tanzania

Nigeria’s Super Eagles begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey against Tanzania on Tuesday with head coach Éric Chelle stressing the need for a strong opening statement in Morocco.

The three-time African champions face the Taifa Stars on Tuesday in Fès. Moreover, the fixture represents Nigeria’s first test in a competitive Group C.Alongside Tanzania, the Super Eagles will battle Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles and the Cranes of Uganda. Early points could prove decisive with only the top two teams guaranteed passage into the knockout phase.

Speaking ahead of the opener, Chelle stressed that tournament momentum often begins on matchday one. He explained that his squad understands the pressure and opportunity attached to their first outing.

“Our first match is very important in a tournament like this,” Chelle said at a pre-match briefing in Fès. “We are happy to be here and our objective is to win.”

The coach also spoke about the team’s preparation and focus since arriving in Morocco. According to Chelle, the players are mentally ready and fully committed to the collective mission.

While Nigeria face Tanzania, attention will also turn to the group’s second fixture on Tuesday. Tunisia and Uganda meet in what promises to be another tightly contested encounter.

As a result, the opening round could immediately shape the direction of Group C. Nigeria’s priority remains heading into the match remains to secure a winning start and build belief.

After falling just short at the previous AFCON by losing to hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the final, the Super Eagles arrive with the aim to take it a step further this time around. Therefore, Chelle’s men know that anything less than a positive beginning could complicate their path.
