Chelsea have signed Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández from Benfica for a British record £106.8m in a deal valid until June 2031.
The 22-year-old, who is an academy product of River Plate, joined Benfica in the summer of 2022.
He won the World Cup with Argentina in December, playing a crucial role in his team’s victory. The energetic midfielder is arguably the most defining arrival in England during the January transfer window.
According to football journalist based in London, Nizaar Kinsella, Benfica have confirmed “Chelsea will pay €121m for Enzo Fernández, with River Plate receiving 25 per cent of the deal.”

After joining River Plate, he was loaned out to Defense y Justicia, where he enjoyed a successful campaign which resulted in him claiming the Recopa Sudamericana and Copa Sudamericana.
On his return from loan, Fernández won the 2021 Argentine Primera División title. Following his eye-catching displays, he was captured by Benfica in 2022.
He has represented Argentina at under-18 level and made his international bow in 2022, before going on to feature for La Albiceleste at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Fernández scored one goal during the World Cup and won the tournament’s Young Player Award.
Boehly “cooking…”
Holistically, it’s been a great January transfer window for Chelsea. The new owners of the club Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have spearheaded two massive transfer windows since taking over.
In January alone, Chelsea have recruited David Datro Fofana, Benoît Badiashile, Andrey Santos, João Félix, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto.
