Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets have qualified for the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after beating Burundi.
The West African side defeated their counterparts 1-0 on Saturday at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
Nigeria had beaten Burundi by the same scoreline in the first leg game in Dares Salam a week ago. The win on Saturday means the Falconets recorded a 2-0 aggregate win and will now be part of this year’s U20 Women’s World Cup.

Opeyemi Ajakaiye’s late goal was the decider in the second leg match after Janet Akeroromowei’s solitary strike against Burundi in he first leg.
It was indeed a tough contest in Abuja. Nigeria wasted a couple chances in both halves with the main culprits being Ajakaiye and Akeroromowei.
The deadlock was broken in the 78th minute when both players combined for the goal, with Ajakaiye netting the winner.
Ajakaiye thought she had extended the lead in the 90th minute but her goal was chalked off by the referee.
Nigeria regulars at U20 Women’s World Cup
Nigeria becomes the first African team to qualify for the 2024 U20 Women’s World Cup, with three more slots left.
Since the U20 Women’s World Cup was launched in 2002, Nigeria have appeared in every edition.

This year’s edition will be held in Colombia from August 31 to September 22.
