Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has authorised the release of ₦10 billion to clear the backlog of pension arrears owed to state retirees.
The governor announced the decision after a meeting with the Chairman of the Bureau of State Pensions, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, and the Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu.
The purpose of the meeting was to address the welfare of retirees and resolve issues related to payment backlogs and the migration to the contributory pension scheme.
Oborevwori stated that his administration has consistently paid ₦1.4 billion monthly in pensions since he took office, totalling ₦36.4 billion to date.

However, he acknowledged that a significant backlog of arrears existed before he became governor.
To ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement of the funds, Oborevwori has also established a team to oversee the payment process.
He emphasised that the welfare of retirees, whom he described as individuals who dedicated their best years to the state, will remain a top priority for his administration.
