EDITORIAL: Makoko deserves more than charity

On February 12, 2025, the National Football League (NFL) donated $100,000 to support Kai Cenat’s school project in Makoko, Lagos. The donation was part of the NFL Foundation’s Inspire Change Campaign, following a charity event in New Orleans involving Cenat and fellow content creator IShowSpeed. While this gesture is commendable, it exposes a recurring failure in Nigeria’s governance—where foreign donations and NGO-driven initiatives substitute for the government's responsibilities.

2023 Presidential Election: Isms aside, vote wisely

The 2023 presidential election would mark the commencement of a defining era in the history of Nigerian politics; Nigerians, voraciously awaiting the nationwide exercise this coming weekend would be looking to put a new person in power; simply put, their favourite candidate.

On Saturday, February 25, Nigerian will be heading to respective polling units across the country to cast their votes to decide the fate of the incoming president.

This would be one of the fiercest presidential contest in modern Nigerian history; the primary contenders are Labour Party’s Peter Obi, All Progressive Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu and People Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

ALSO READ: 5 lessons to learn from this new notes scarcity

It is important to note that there are eighteen (18) contenders for the zenith position of the nation, however, the aforementioned candidates have been able to gain intense popularity since their respective party’s primary election.

Ahead of the coming presidential election, this writer would like to admonish Nigerians to desist from every form of ism.

Rid yourself of any form of sensationalism, favoritism, nepotism, tribalism and other forms of isms and just be logical. It’s one week to the presidential election, and see the heinous events going on in the country.

Why would anyone in their right minds choose to re-elect the ruling party back into power?

The decisions of the who want to willingly choose/vote someone who is prepared to run the nation into further rubbles? Make it make sense.

The timing of the new naira note is ridiculous and it has proved to be otiose as of today. If not for the appalling games of the leaders of the nation, the introduction of new naira notes is unscrupulous as it serves no purpose but trauma and has only brought about chaos and pandemonium in the country.

A photo of the new naira note (N500 notes)

Vote Competence….

It is quintessential the common man apply their brain in the coming elections, vote for competence; someone with an ideal vision and structure for the coming years. Not someone that feels it his birthright to emerge as president; let no one sell tribe to you or religion, and it is apparent as daylight that the nation requires transformation.

Someone that is worth listening to and also healthy, not someone suffering from dementia. In this time, we do not need an absentee president, we need someone who is pivotal in connecting with the nation. We do not seek a magician, we seek a leader who is prepared to roll up the sleeves and put in the work, someone whose aim and objective is to make the nation work again.

Do not forget the ruling party hoarded palliatives during the lockdown in 2020; remember the Lekki tollgate massacre during the #EndSars protest in the same year; hyperinflation, incessant scarcity of fuel, etc. kick against the toxicity of the ruling party, go for competence.

Let no one sell tribalism to you. The problems in the country should lecture you on what to do, enough said.

Watch the video from the 2020 Lekki tollgate shootout below.

I mean, it is you and I who voyage the streets daily that suffer the impecunious decisions of these leaders. How can you a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria be buying your own nation’s legal tender at an outrageous amount just so you can find something to eat?

Sit down and think about your decisions. Once again, take away your sentiments and vote competence this coming weekend.
