Ondo 2020: Deputy Governor gets PDP waiver

After the Ondo state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had completed screening of candidates. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the opposition party approved the application of the State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi – who requested for the party’s waiver to enable him to participate in the primary election of the party slated for 22nd July 2020.

In a letter dated 26th June 2020. Signed by both the National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, and the National Secretary, Senator Umaru Ibrahim Tsauri. The Deputy Governor received the accepted request on 2nd July 2020.

According to the letter, the PDP NWC found that Ajayi has satisfied the relevant provisions of the party’s Constitution. Particularly section 50(5)(b) (as amended in 2017) for granting a waiver.

Elated about the development, the Deputy Governor urged his teeming supporters particularly, members of the party. Asking them to buckle down in a view to ensuring success at the primary and at the general election slated for October 10th, 2020.

Agboola Ajayi Vs Oluwarotimi Akeredolu?

With the coast clear for Ajayi to contest against the candidate of the All Progressives Congress who could be his principal, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. However, the primaries is expected to be a tight contest in the Southwest state.

The Deputy Governor, Ajayi and the Governor, Akeredolu have recently been at loggerheads before the former resigned from the ruling party to pick up the PDP membership card from his ward.

Akeredolu is touted to be the likely winner of the APC primary election. Meanwhile, Ajayi could face a stiff battle with Eyitayo Jegede in the PDP primaries. Eyitayo was the PDP party flag bearer in the last election and a grass root politician like Ajayi.

Meanwhile, APC also has is own issues to deal with as it is struggling to adhere to the guideline for the primary as laid down by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party and the electoral umpire would be keen to avoid a repeat of what happened in Zamfara, and Rivers States that left APC with no candidate in the last general election.

Ahead of their respective primaries, all fingers are crossed o see who will emerge as the candidates of the two main parties ahead of the October 10 poll,
