EDITORIAL: Makoko deserves more than charity

On February 12, 2025, the National Football League (NFL) donated $100,000 to support Kai Cenat’s school project in Makoko, Lagos. The donation was part of the NFL Foundation’s Inspire Change Campaign, following a charity event in New Orleans involving Cenat and fellow content creator IShowSpeed. While this gesture is commendable, it exposes a recurring failure in Nigeria’s governance—where foreign donations and NGO-driven initiatives substitute for the government's responsibilities.

Sowore, Burna Boy, and the Rest of Us

Human rights activist and former presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore has been the talk of the media for some years now. He is notable for leading the ‘Revolution Now’ protests.

He frequently encourages Nigerians to speak up against every form of oppression. Also, he believes that the people should demand accountability from the government at all times.

Sowore is a man of many antecedents. Above all, he is a man of courage and consistency. In as much as he vied for the office of the president of Nigeria, he still did not relax on his ambition after he lost in the elections. He stayed true to his cause, speaking out constantly, and leading protests for change.

Nigeria is celebrating 60 years of independence today. Over the years, many expectations have dwindled, hopes dashed, and dreams faded, because of the recalcitrant attitude of some of our leaders. Often, the people shudder in disbelief as to how a nation so great has allowed itself get to such a state.

How do our past heroes feel when watching from the great beyond, the outcome of a nation they fought with sweat and blood to liberate?

Will they congratulate the present leaders or will they bow their heads in shame? Is their labour not in vain?

Many are tired of the poor state of the nation. But there are some who can no longer stand and watch the next generation experience the nation dive into dilapidation.

The status of the ‘giant of Africa’ which Nigerians pride themselves on, is gradually wearing off. Nevertheless, there are people who have not given up yet. One of such persons is Omoyele Sowore.

United we stand

It is often said that ‘it is easy to break a broom stick, but it is difficult to break a bunch’. Sowore cannot do it alone; hence, he is calling on other Nigerians to leave their ‘keyboard protests’ and join him on the streets. As Nigeria celebrates today, Sowore will be protesting against bad governance and oppression.

On this premise, the human rights activist called on Nigeria’s foremost Afrobeat musician Burna Boy to join him in the protest. In his request which he made on Twitter, Sowore challenged Burna Boy.

This statement has sparked reactions on that social media space. Many have thrown their weight behind the human rights activist while some have opined that Burna Boy has a right to decline Sowore’s request.

Those who think that Burna Boy should join in the protests believe that being a supporter of human rights activism goes beyond making lyrics and putting sound to it for the praises of Nigerians cum Africans. An activist goes to the street peacefully when necessary.

Besides, being an ’African Giant’ transcends bearing the title. It must come with action. Moreso, Sowore has stated the aim of the protest.

Are Nigerians cowards?

Burna Boy passes as that individual who is brave and does not get cowed easily. We are not oblivious to the fact that Burna boy is a hardworking musician who puts in quality effort to his work. That notwithstanding, bravery goes beyond personal interests and benefits.

The ‘Wonderful’ crooner has tagged Nigerians cowards because they hardly fight for their rights. There have been many instances where the rights of Nigerians have been trampled upon. Instead of fighting back, they leave it for God.

This passiveness has made us to wallow in harsh conditions. The people have been oppressed for long. A nation at 60 years of independence is still struggling to provide stable electricity for her citizens.

Bad roads and infrastructure is our trademark. Likewise, the increasing rate of unemployment cannot be discounted.

Burna Boy does not have to join in the protest. However, given his past comments about the cowardice of Nigerians, it would be sheer hypocrisy if he doesn’t honour the call.

Talk is cheap. There is no point condemning those who have not yet ‘gathered enough liver’ to fight their cause. Rather, empower them by your action.
