How to easily move your Google Photos to iCloud

Do you know that Google Photos can now be easily moved to iCloud?

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Using an official application created by this company, you can still use Google Photos content for your iCloud account. However, if you are paying for a Google One subscription to keep an old Google Photos account alive, it is high time you transfer all of it to iCloud.

The transfer tool is hidden in the ā€œData & privacyā€ tab under Google Takeout in your Google account settings. It is so simple to useā€” open the Google account linked to Google Photos in your browser, sign in to Google Takeout, choose ā€œiCloud Photosā€ as the transfer location, and sign up with Apple ID. Transferring via Google Takeout typically can take a few hours up to several days ā€“ the transfer is initiated automatically after the transfer is set off.

Migrated photos and videos are not lost in the iCloud or Google Photos account but are only moved to a new location. Both services will keep the file properties of the relocated files (coordinates, date/times, etc.) and try to organize photos into the albums you may have initially created; however, transferred albums will not be reconstructed 100%.

When transferring to Google Photos, ensure your account has enough storage space to hold all the pictures and videos you intend to transfer. Otherwise, two copies of the same file may be possible if the transfer is resumed. There is some disagreement between the two letters from Apple and Google on this issue: Apple claims that two registrations will not result in two similar marks being granted. In contrast, Google claims this is possible, and I believe one should be careful.

However, please remember that the options to select folders and files for backup are independent of your phone’s or computer’s available disk space. Here, iCloud and Google Photos exchange messages through the cloud through conversations between the two services.

Other information, such as the accepted file types, can be obtained from Apple or Google file transfer guide.
