Nigeria’s Super Eagles have seen their 2026 World Cup hopes dashed after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo 4–3 on penalties in Rabat, following a tense 1–1 draw after extra time. The defeat ends Nigeria’s qualification campaign in heartbreaking fashion.
Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria an early lead in just the third minute when his shot deflected into the net. But DR Congo struck back in the 32nd minute when Meschak Elia capitalized on a midfield turnover to level the score.
Things unraveled further for Nigeria just before halftime, when star striker Victor Osimhen was forced off with a hamstring injury. Without his driving presence, Nigeria’s attack lost its edge and momentum in the second half.
In extra time, both sides showed signs of fatigue. Congo thought they had taken the lead when Noah Sadiki scored, but the goal was disallowed by the referee. Nigeria survived a late header from Congolese captain Chancel Mbemba, saved by their goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Post 90 minutes
With the score still level, the match went to a penalty shootout. Nigeria missed early, as Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon failed to convert. DR Congo, meanwhile, brought on substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu just before penalties; he made two key saves.

After the final whistle, Nigeria’s head coach Éric Chelle erupted in frustration. He accused the DR Congo staff of using “voodoo” during the shootout.
The Leopards now progress to the inter-confederation playoff in March, keeping alive their unlikely road to a first World Cup appearance since 1974 when the country competed as Zaire.
