Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing sports in the state by unveiling the management and players of Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens Football Clubs.
Fred Itua, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary in a statement said the event, held at the Government House in Benin City, underscored the government’s determination to restore the clubs to their former glory.
Represented by his Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, Governor Okpebholo emphasized the crucial role of sports in promoting social cohesion, unity, and economic growth.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Idahosa said, “Todayās event underscores this administrationās dedication to utilizing sports as a vehicle for progress.
The appointment of a new management team and additional players signifies our resolve to elevate Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens FC to new heights in national and international competitions.”

He further charged the newly appointed management team, including Austin Iyamu as Technical Director, Peter Obanor as Team Manager, and Greg Ikhenoba as Coach of Bendel Insurance FC, to improve the clubsā performance.
Idahosa also urged the new players to embrace discipline, teamwork, and professionalism to secure victories and make the state proud.
Reflecting on the achievements of Edo Queens FC as defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), the Deputy Governor expressed pride in the club’s success at both domestic and continental levels.
“Their superlative performance has reaffirmed Edo Stateās position as the home of sports in Nigeria,” he added.
Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Desmond Enabulele, commended Governor Okpebholo for his unwavering support, attributing the recent successes of Edo Queens FC at the CAF Womenās Championship to the positive energy infused into the team.
He assured the public that the new management and players were carefully selected to bring honour to the state.
The newly unveiled players and management team also pledged to repay the governmentās investment by delivering national and international victories while providing entertaining football for fans.
The highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of 13 new players for Edo Queens FC, who are set to strengthen the team as they begin their 2025 NWFL season campaign.
The team will kick off their title defence on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, against Abia Angels FC at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
