The Edo State Government has partnered with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to make tertiary education more accessible and affordable for students in state-owned institutions.

The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Pally Iyamu, announced the initiative on Monday, stating that the partnership would enable Edo students to enroll in universities and other higher institutions without the immediate burden of paying tuition fees.

He further explained that students would also receive a monthly stipend to help cover their expenses while in school.

“This is to let Edo people know that the state government has entered into partnership with Nigerian Education Loan Fund to make tertiary education accessible and affordable to its citizens in the state-owned tertiary institutions,” Iyamu said.

“I am calling on all students across the various tertiary institutions in the state to take advantage of this great initiative by the state government.”

Highlighting the impact of the initiative, Iyamu emphasized that it would significantly reduce the financial burden on parents, who previously had to pay hundreds of thousands of naira in tuition fees for their children.

He expressed appreciation for the leadership of Senator Monday Okpebholo and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating a framework that allows all students to pursue higher education regardless of their financial background.

The partnership is expected to help curb student dropouts and other financial barriers to attaining higher degrees.

To ensure widespread awareness, the state government has scheduled a two-day sensitization program for March 11 and 12 across the three senatorial districts.

The event will take place at Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, for Edo South on March 11, while the AAU Student Conference Centre, Ekpoma, and Edo University, Iyamho, will host the sessions for Edo Central and Edo North, respectively, on March 12.
