The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has called on residents to adopt responsible waste management practices during and after this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebrations to promote a clean and healthy environment.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, assured the public that adequate measures have been put in place to manage the expected surge in waste generation across the city during the festive period.

He said that refuse evacuation would continue uninterrupted on all designated routes.“Eid-el-Kabir is a time of celebration, gratitude, and communal unity,” Gbadegesin said.

“As residents gather with family and friends, we must remain conscious of our environmental responsibilities. Proper disposal of animal waste, food remnants, and packaging materials is essential to uphold public hygiene standards.”

He noted that LAWMA officials and enforcement teams would be actively monitoring waste collection and disposal activities throughout the metropolis to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Gbadegesin warned against indiscriminate dumping of waste on road medians, drainage systems, and open spaces, stressing that such actions endanger public health and attract penalties.

He also urged butchers and livestock dealers to utilise approved slaughter facilities to prevent contamination and maintain hygiene in line with public health standards.

While wishing Muslims a peaceful and joyful Eid celebration, the LAWMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s year-round commitment to keeping Lagos clean.

He encouraged residents to properly bag their waste, make use of containers, and ensure prompt evacuation through their assigned PSP operators.

In a related development, LAWMA has joined global efforts to commemorate World Environment Day 2025, observed annually on 5 June.

This year’s theme, “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” highlights the urgent need to combat the environmental hazards posed by plastic waste.

According to Gbadegesin, the theme aligns closely with LAWMA’s vision of a cleaner, healthier Lagos.

He emphasised that restoring the environment requires sustained, collective effort beginning with individual behaviour and community engagement.

LAWMA already launched a series of advocacy and clean-up campaigns in partnership with environmental groups, schools, and local organisations.

These initiatives aim to promote environmental responsibility at the grassroots level.

Gbadegesin urged market leaders, religious institutions, and community groups to educate their members on the impact of daily actions—such as cleaning drains, sorting recyclables, and discouraging street dumping—which, he said, could have a long-term positive effect on the environment.

“World Environment Day 2025 presents an opportunity for every Lagosian to recommit to a sustainable future,” he stated.

“We must all reflect on the consequences of neglecting our environment and work together to restore and safeguard the ecosystems that support our lives and livelihoods.”
