Ekiti govt to recruit more doctors, upgrade hospitals

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has announced plans to recruit more medical doctors and health workers across the state’s general hospitals and primary health centers.

The move aims to tackle the shortage of medical personnel and ensure better healthcare services for residents.

Governor Oyebanji made this known on Monday during an inspection tour of road projects and the renovation of nine general hospitals across the state.

He emphasised his administration’s commitment to making quality healthcare accessible, affordable, and available for all Ekiti residents.

To facilitate the recruitment, Governor Oyebanji revealed that his administration is working in collaboration with the Ekiti Caucus of the National Assembly, which has agreed to fund the salaries and allowances of newly recruited doctors and health workers for the first year.

“We are taking immediate action to ensure that all our general hospitals are fully staffed with competent medical professionals before the end of the year,” the governor said.

He also noted that the government has renovated at least one primary healthcare center in each of the state’s 177 wards, ensuring that residents, especially those in rural areas, have access to medical care.

The governor reiterated that hospital renovations will not only cover infrastructure but also the provision of state-of-the-art medical equipment to enhance service delivery.

“We are not just renovating; we are equipping these hospitals with modern medical facilities to meet global standards.

“This is part of the gains of continuity in government. My predecessor, Kayode Fayemi, renovated 11 General Hospitals before leaving office in 2022, and we are currently working on nine more,” he added.

He encouraged residents to take advantage of the improved healthcare facilities, urging them to utilize government hospitals instead of seeking alternatives elsewhere.

In addition to healthcare improvements, Governor Oyebanji also inspected several road projects under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).

Over 1,000 kilometers of rural roads are currently being constructed to boost transportation, agriculture, and economic activities in the state.

“We signed a contract with the people of Ekiti the day they elected us. What we are seeing today is the result of two years of hard work, planning, and execution. We are punching above our weight, and these projects reflect the power of continuity in governance,” he stated.

Among the inspected projects were: Are-Oye Road, Ilupeju – Igbo Egan – Ayede Road, Iye – Olopomeji – Ikun Road, Ijesa-Isu General Hospital and Ijan General Hospital.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Oyebanji Filani, lauded the governor’s efforts in revamping the health sector, describing it as a significant step toward achieving universal healthcare coverage in state.
