Ex-wonderkid Nwakali joins English third-tier outfit Barnsley

Barnsley Football Club have confirmed the capture of Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali from G.D Chaves for an undisclosed fee. His move is subject to visa and international clearance.

Nwakali arrives at Oakwell on a three-year contract from the Portuguese club having played 32 games in the Primeira Liga last term.

The 26-year-old began his promising career at Arsenal following a scintillating performance at the 2015 U-17 World Cup. At the cadet championship, he grabbed the Golden Ball award as the best player in the tournament after captaining Nigeria to win the title.

After different sojourns on loan to different European sides, the midfielder finally settled with La Liga outfit Huesca in 2019. He also went on to feature for Spanish sides Alcorcón and Ponferradina in Spain before joining Chaves in 2023.

Expressing his delight at his new club, Nwakali said he is “very happy to sign for Barnsley Football Club.”

He said: “I spoke to Mladen and the Head Coach Darrell earlier in the summer and I knew that this was an exciting opportunity for me, I know I can bring a lot to the team.”

The brilliant midfielder represented Nigeria at various youth levels before gaining his first full cap in 2022 at the African Cup of Nations. He came off the bench for The Super Eagles in wins against Egypt and Sudan in the group stages before starting the final game against Guinea-Bissau as the Super Eagles recorded a 2-0 victory.
