FG declares Tuesday public holiday to honour late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior. The declaration, approved by President Bola Tinubu, is in line with the earlier announcement of a seven-day national mourning period.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who disclosed the decision on behalf of the government, said the holiday is a gesture of respect for Buhari’s service and contributions to the country.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister stated.

He emphasized that the day should be used to reflect on Buhari’s leadership, legacy, and the values he stood for. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” he added.

Citizens have been urged to observe the day in a spirit of peace, patriotism, and unity—qualities the late president was said to have embodied in his vision for Nigeria.

The national mourning, which began on Sunday, July 13, includes directives for flags to be flown at half-mast throughout the week.

The Federal Government also extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
