FG begins payment of N32,000 pension increment to retirees – PTAD

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has started the implementation of new pension increments for retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme, with payments reflected in the September 2025 payroll.

According to PTAD, the package includes a fixed N32,000 increase and percentage adjustments of 10.66 percent and 12.95 percent for eligible categories. About 832,000 pensioners will benefit from the adjustment.

The approval follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive in August after a request by PTAD’s Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, for emergency budgetary support to implement pension reforms.

The reforms include pension harmonisation, enrolment of retirees into the National Health Insurance Scheme, settlement of unfunded liabilities, and specific increments for pensioners of defunct and privatised agencies.

PTAD confirmed that the Federal Ministry of Finance released N820.188 billion from the N845 billion emergency funding earlier approved, making the immediate rollout possible.

“The commencement of the increments for DBS pensioners in the September 2025 cycle has been made possible through the release of funds by the Federal Ministry of Finance,” PTAD stated.

The directorate expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Accountant-General, and key committees of the National Assembly for their support.

PTAD also acknowledged pension associations, including the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and the Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria, for their cooperation during negotiations.

The DBS applies to those who retired before the Contributory Pension Scheme introduced in 2004. Many have faced irregular payments, delayed harmonisation, and healthcare gaps, which the new reforms aim to resolve.
