FIFA slams Watford registration ban over Kalu transfer


English club Watford has been placed under a registration ban over their signing of Nigeria’s Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu.

According to the Watford Observer, the Hornets are yet to duly execute their financial obligations towards Megamu Football Academy Club.

Since he switched to England from French Ligue 1 outfit, Bordeaux, injuries have hampered his form at the club.

Megamu Football Academy, a football club in Nigeria, claimed to have been responsible for the development of the player. They have however stated that they are yet to receive a percentage from his sale.

“In this regard, we wish to inform the parties that a ban from registering new players internationally has been implemented,” FIFA stated. The football governing body also confirmed its effectiveness as of 19 July 2023.

“Moreover, and by the aforementioned decision, the Football Association (in copy) is requested to immediately implement on the respondent the club Watford FC, if not done yet, a ban from registering new players at the national level”, a letter to the club stated.

The letter is signed by Julien Deux, head of judicial bodies (ajudicatory).
