Flamengo part ways with Filipe Luis despite dominant 8-0 victory

Flamengo have dismissed former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis just hours after an emphatic 8-0 victory. The rout sealed progression to the Campeonato Carioca final. Yet celebration quickly turned into shock inside the Rio giants’ camp.

Luis, 40, had averaged a trophy every 14 matches across 100 games in charge. Since replacing Tite in September 2024, he delivered seven titles. However, consecutive final defeats in 2026 raised pressure.

Flamengo finished runners-up in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa Sudamericana last month. Nevertheless, they demolished Madureira 11-0 on aggregate after Monday’s second-leg thrashing. A third straight Carioca crown now awaits against Fluminense on Sunday.

The dismissal arrived abruptly at 00:59 local time via a brief club statement. “Filipe Luis will no longer be in charge of the professional team. Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (physical trainer) are also leaving the club along with him,” it read.

“Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luis for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey. The club wishes him success and the best of luck in the continuation of his professional career.” The announcement stunned supporters after such a dominant display.

Among his finest achievements was guiding Flamengo to Copa Libertadores glory in 2025. Notably, he became the ninth man to win the competition as player and coach. He had previously lifted the trophy in 2019 and 2022.

Luis also secured Serie A, Copa do Brasil and Campeonato Carioca honours. Additionally, he won the Fifa Challenger Cup and Fifa Derby of the Americas. His side reached the Club World Cup last 16, losing 4-2 to Bayern Munich.

Domestically, Flamengo sit 11th after three league matches. They trail leaders Palmeiras by six points, albeit with a game in hand.
