The contract also gives the option of a 12-month extension for the 23-year-old centre-back.

“The Club is delighted to confirm the signing of Calvin Bassey from Ajax for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance, which is expected to be received during the early part of next week,” the statement reads.

“The 23-year-old defender has agreed a contract until the summer of 2027, with a club option to extend by a further 12 months.”

Despite being eligible to represent England or Italy, Bassey chose Nigeria due to his parental heritage.

He made his international bow in the first leg of the 2022 World Cup qualification play-off between Nigeria and Ghana. He has been capped 10 times for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
