Funny Reactions Trail Trending News in Nigeria

Funny

Nigeria is a blessed nation with hardworking, kind, and funny people. It is no news that the country is going through some trying times. However, it has not stopped the people from exhibiting their true characters. The fact that the people resorted to seeing the comical aspect of issues in Nigeria does not invalidate their desire for a better nation. Rather, it shows how the people can easily turn a bad situation into one worthy of laughter.

House of Reps receive bill to change Nigeria’s name

Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant, proposed a bill to the House of Representatives seeking a change in Nigeria’s name. United African Republic (UAR) was the proposed new name. His reason was that Nigeria as a name was imposed by our colonial masters. However, it wasn’t long before Nigerians threw shades at Jokotoye’s proposal and developed funny reactions to it. Memes were equally created to elicit laughter.

Some people went as far as creating the currency of the new nation. Also, ‘’Nigeria’’ was replaced with ‘’United African Republic’’ in the nation’s anthem. Hence, the people called themselves UARians, mocking the awkwardness of the proposed new name. Another group stated that Nigeria wants to change her name so that they can escape paying their debt to China and other nations.

Furthermore, those who condemned the proposed change of name said that it won’t solve the problems of the country.

“The country needs to fix her roads, provide jobs and make the country more habitable for the people. The state of insecurity in the nation is becoming uncontrollable by the day. Instead of our leaders to think of something reasonable, they are suggesting a change in the country’s name. If funny was a name, our leaders should all be christened with it,’’ a commenter said.

NYSC to deploy corps members to fight war

With Nigeria’s change of name still trending, the Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim stated that corps members can be deployed to fight war. He made this statement on Wednesday, June 2, while speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily.

Funny

‘’Corps member are on reserve. They are part of the national defense policy of this country. So, where there is serious war, our corps members are educated, they are knowledgeable and they can be trained. You see the drill and so on.

Funny

‘’You can imagine within the short three weeks in the orientation camps. The corps members are molded. They are like soldiers. You see female corps members blowing the horn, playing with the military band.

‘’So, if not for the knowledge, where are you going to mobilize such young Nigerians to train them quickly to put in their best for the country? So, corps members are on reserve. They are also part of the national defense policy,” Ibrahim said.

Funny reactions to the NYSC DG’s statement

As usual, there were funny reactions to the statement of Brig. Gen. Ibrahim. With a monthly allowance of 33,000 naira, many intending corps members stated that they are not ready to die for their fatherland.

One commenter affirmed that NYSC has outlived its usefulness. Hence, they want to frustrate Nigerian graduates with the one year compulsory service program. Another person said that first class graduates should be made to stay in front of the war zone. This was because they are more knowledgeable. Besides, they should know more tactics on how to defeat the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

Consequently, another person said that if NYSC deploys him to Sambisa forest, a dreaded zone for terrorists in the north, he would seek nationality in Togo.

In addition, some people suggested that President Muhammadu Buhari should calculate all his salaries from now till 2023 (when his tenure will be over) and that the citizens will gladly pay him so that he can resign. Their reason is that they are tired of his leadership style which has brought a lot of suffering to the people.

Funny

The laughter elicited from these funny reactions made many people to applaud the rate at which Nigerians are able to suppress bad news in the country. As one commenter noted, ‘’Nigerians are actually good and lively people. It is our selfish leaders that brought out the negativity in us.’’

As most Nigerian youths would say, ‘We Move’. Praying that as we move on, we manage to navigate these current challenges peacefully.
