Atlético Madrid confirmed the signing of Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher on Wednesday for £34 million. The England midfielder joins Atlético on a five-year contract, completing a transfer that saw multiple twists.
Gallagher’s move looked imminent last week but faced delays. Chelsea‘s deal for Atlético’s Samu Omorodion falling through complicated the final stages of Gallagher’s transfer.
The 24-year-old captained Chelsea for much of last season, making 50 appearances. He played a pivotal role due to injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

How Gallagher left for Atléti
Despite 95 appearances and solid contributions at Stamford Bridge, which saw him return 10 goals and 10 assists in all, Gallagher’s tenure was overshadowed by manager Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in May. The incoming manager’s appointment uncertainty led Chelsea to consider Gallagher’s sale if a suitable offer arose.
The player was initially hesitant about leaving but faced a contract situation with only a year remaining. Chelsea valued him at around £50 million, but his sale was seen as a way to align with the Premier League’s financial rules.
Rejecting offers from Aston Villa and a new Chelsea contract, he engaged with Atlético Madrid. After agreeing on a £34 million fee, he spent five days in Madrid, training and preparing for his new role.
The transfer faced a hiccup when Chelsea’s bid for Omorodion fell apart, disrupting Atlético’s financial plans. However, the progress in Joao Felix’s deal helped finalize Gallagher’s move.
Gallagher was officially introduced to Atlético’s fans at the Wanda Metropolitano, alongside other new signings like Alexander Sørloth, Robin Le Normand, and Julian Álvarez. The deal marks a new chapter in Gallagher’s career, as he joins a revamped Atlético Madrid squad.
