Gauff, Djokovic secure huge cash prizes for winning U.S Open


2023 U.S Open champions Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic have both bagged whopping cash rewards for their victories at the year’s last Grand Slam.

While Gauff beat Aryna Sabalenka to win the women’s singles title, Djokovic overcame Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Both players have been rewarded with a prize sum of $3 million each.

Gauff came from a set down to beat Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2 to claim her first Grand Slam title.

The 19-year-old therefore became the first American teenager to win at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 1999.

Sabalenka have been a consistent figure throughout the year. She reached the semi-finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments. After winning the Australian Open early in the year, she reached the semi-finals at the French Open and at Wimbledon.

Djokovic extended his men’s singles title record with a brilliant 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 win on Sunday. He also equalled Margaret Courtā€™s record of 24 Grand Slams.

The victory is his fourth win in 10 U.S Open finals. Djokovic had won the Australian Open and French Open titles earlier this year.

The 36-year-old Serb becomes the oldest U.S. Open menā€™s winner in the Open Era. He is also the first to win three Grand Slam events in a season for the fourth time.
