Gemini has been one of Googleās biggest focuses this year, and it has slowly been added to more of the companyās services, even to the point where it replaces Assistant on Android. Still, it has not been the case since the migration, and Gemini was missing a few features that Google Assistant employed to have. Some of these gaps have been addressed by Googleāthe company has recently incorporated support for Google Assistant Routinesāand now it seems to be expanding Geminiās capabilities even more.
A recent leak fromĀ Assemble DebugĀ (viaĀ Android Authority) reveals that Google is testing Gemini extensions for WhatsApp, Spotify, and Google Messages on Android. Previously,Ā Google AssistantĀ Actions allowed users to interact with apps directly, such as sending a WhatsApp message to a contact. While Gemini can already perform similar tasks using Google Assistant, it’s now gaining its native extensions, which should enable smoother interactions and deeper integration with these apps.
Although the feature is still being tested, the leaker managed to activate the extensions on the Google app for Android (beta version 15.40.31.29). The screenshot reveals that Google Assistant actions are being transitioned into Gemini extensions. It also indicates that Gemini will learn which extensions you use for specific tasks, like calling or messaging particular contacts, to offer a more personalized experience.

Contrary to expectation, each extension functions as it is expected. For instance, it was rather recently that when you requested Gemini to share a message through WhatsApp, the whole thing had to go through Google Assistant Actions and was not as efficient as it is now; the action is performed via native extension and opens WhatsApp. What must be a few years ahead of its time looks significantly faster than the current implementation as well. The same applies to the extension for Spotify and Google Messages. P.S. Yep, our Spotify extension is perfect for the free version users as well.
As of now, such a feature is still under trial, and it is uncertain when testers will make it available to the public. But, given that leaker was able to turn it on with a little bit of modification, it has to be pretty close, right? However, at least it is nice to see that Google has started addressing some of the concerns Gemini on Android has deservedly received.
