Genevieve Nnaji condemns viral post urging Igbo men to avoid marrying Igbo women

Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has sharply criticised a viral post on X that advised Igbo men to shun marrying women from their own ethnic group.

The contentious tweet claimed Igbo men risk being falsely accused of raping their daughters by Igbo wives and suggested they instead seek partners from East Africa.

“Dear Igbo men, instead of marrying Igbo woman that’ll falsely accuse you of raping your daughter, better look outside for a wife… Go to East Africa, especially Rwanda and pick a damsel,” the X user wrote.

Nnaji, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State, did not hide her displeasure. Responding to the post, she said, “In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it.”

Although some users attempted to interpret the tweet as a warning against false accusers rather than a blanket statement about women, the award-winning actress maintained her position, cautioning against harmful generalisations.

“The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women,” she added.
