Google has launched a new AI Mode powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro on select Pixel devices, enhancing user experience with on-device AI support.
Integrated into the Pixel Launcher, AI Mode provides a streamlined interface for interacting with Gemini, allowing users to issue commands and receive contextual responses without switching apps.
The feature appears as a dedicated shortcut in the app drawer and includes voice input, keyboard typing, and quick access to tools like summaries, code help, and image generation. AI Mode replaces the traditional Assistant in some contexts and positions Gemini as a central AI companion.

AI Mode is designed to handle a wide range of tasks, including web searches, productivity queries, and device control. It uses Gemini 2.5 Pro, the latest version of Google’s large language model, optimized for faster performance and broader task handling.
The update is being gradually rolled out to Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro users, with plans to expand support to future Pixel devices. Users can activate AI Mode via a long press on the power button, similar to the old Assistant trigger.
This rollout is part of Google’s broader strategy to embed AI more deeply into Android, creating seamless user interactions and improving device intelligence. By placing Gemini at the core of device operation, Google aims to redefine how users interact with their phones.
While early feedback highlights faster responses and improved context recognition, Google has yet to confirm full global availability or whether other Android phones will receive AI Mode in future updates.
