Google Docs just simplified document organization

Google Docs

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Writing and editing is now done primarily on Google Docs for many of us for school and work. Even though Microsoft Word has more functions, Google Docs is more suitable by comfort, accessibility, and ability to collaborate. Google brings new features to Docs and updates Workspace apps frequently, and now itā€™s adding a new feature that will make it much easier to sort the contentā€”especially when thereā€™s a bunch of it in a single document.

Google has developed a new tab bar in Google Docs to help manage poor depths or lengths of the documents seamlessly. If you have ever lost your bearings in a sea of long documents, this feature is for you. Even if presently the effective means of separation of sections and subsections is the usage of headings and the document outline, the new tabs feature goes a step further by enabling the content and checkpointing at any given point and allows for easy navigation between sections.

According to the company, the feature will further enable users to divide the long, formal documents into smaller, more manageable chunks and read only those parts that piqued their interests. Moreover, in every tab they can create up to three subtabs in order to ā€œprovide structure at an even deeper levelā€ to the document. With this update, Google Docs becomes slightly more like Coda, a documentation tool used in many organizations worldwide.

For some extra fun, Google will also let users choose an emoji to attach to each tab, so you get a visual of what that tab is for. The emoji will be placed to the left of the tab title inside the left panel instead of the tab icon. Further, the best thing I found about this feature is the URL option, which allows users to share links to specific tabs instead of the whole document, located in the three-dot menu next to each tab.

Google Docs now features new tabs, and you have to click on the bullet-point symbol, which lies at the top-left corner of the web editor. But only those who have document editing rights can create or edit tabs; those who only have access to view the document can only switch between the tabs. All users of Google Workspace on personal and paid accounts now have access to the tabs feature. Google says that this feature may take up to fifteen days to be visible to every person.
