Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has enacted an amendment to the Traditional Rulers Law, Cap 155, in order to solidify the role of traditional institutions in the state’s governance framework.

In a statement shared on his official X page on Monday, Mr Eno underscored the critical importance of traditional rulers in supporting the stateā€™s mission for sustained peace and unity.Ā

He highlighted that the new amendment introduces a rotational system for the office of the President-General among the state’s diverse ethnic groups, a landmark move aimed at resolving longstanding ethnic tensions and promoting harmony across Akwa Ibom.

Furthermore, Governor Eno recognised the invaluable contributions of traditional leaders by presenting four additional Paramount Rulers with brand-new Toyota Prado SUVs, complementing the five already distributed earlier.

He expressed confidence that these vehicles would enhance the traditional rulers’ capacity to serve their communities more effectively, thereby reinforcing their crucial role in maintaining security and advancing the objectives of the Arise Agenda.

ā€œIā€™m pleased to announce that I have assented to the amendment of the Traditional Rulers Law Cap 155 Laws of Akwa Ibom State. This important update, which was recently passed by the State House of Assembly, now provides for the rotation of the seat of the President General, ensuring inclusivity and fairness in our traditional institutions.  We remain committed to promoting equity across all levels of leadership in Akwa Ibom.

ā€œI call on all our traditional leaders to remain steadfast in working collaboratively with the government to sustain peace and promote development throughout the state. Together, we are building a brighter and more unified future for Akwa Ibomā€, the statement added.
