Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu Suspends Reopening of Religious Gatherings

Lagos state has suspended the reopening of religious gatherings. This is due to the rising cases of Covid-19. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier planned to open various worship centres from June 19. But with the rising case of the virus, Lagos state has suspended the reopening indefinitely.

With 7,319 cases in Lagos, she has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria. 6,100 are currently on admission, while 1,137 have been discharged and 82 have died.

According to the government, it has a thorough review of the condition of the state. It’s review saw the need to suspend that attempt of reopening religious gatherings.

The Governor issued this statement today. According to him, the government will continue to monitor the situation closely. In addition, it will continue to base its decision-making on data modelling. Likewise, it will act on the responsibility that ensures the protection of all residents.

Apart from religious centres, events centres and social clubs will also remain closed for now, the governor stated.

However, Governor Sanwo-Olu warned that the state was now fully in the phase of personal responsibility regarding the pandemic. Hence, the government said that it will maintain ways to protect the citizens. But, what will ultimately save residents and defeat the virus was the sensible personal decisions taken on a daily basis.

In conclusion, he used the opportunity to thank frontline workers. This includes medical staff, rapid response teams, support personnel such as call centre workers, drivers and cleaners.

In addition, monitoring teams at state and local government levels, and all security agencies were appreciated for their efforts. These efforts have helped in pushing towards winning the war against corona virus.

It is therefore imperative that everyone endeavour to keep safe. There should be continued regular washing of hands, keeping of social distancing, and wearing of face masks.
