Ilkay Gundogan was once the quiet engine powering Manchester City’s midfield. He was that player whose contributions often went unnoticed amidst the club’s galaxy of stars.

While others grabbed the headlines, Gundogan kept the midfield humming, occasionally chipping in with a goal or assist.

For years, his work remained in the shadows, appreciated by few but often overshadowed by the flashier talents around him.

That all changed in the 2020-21 season when Gundogan stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

With a remarkable 17 goals across all competitions, he emerged as City’s top scorer. This came as a surprising but well-deserved accolade for a player who had always prioritized the team over personal glory.

His goals were not just plentiful; they were pivotal, often turning the tide in City’s favour during their relentless pursuit of silverware.

Gundogan’s place in City folklore was cemented on a dramatic final day of the 2021-22 Premier League season.

With City trailing Aston Villa and the title slipping from their grasp, it was Gundogan who rose to the occasion, scoring two of the three goals that completed a stunning comeback.

His heroics not only secured the title but also dashed Liverpool’s hopes, adding an extra layer of sweetness to the victory for City fans.

As if that was not enough, Gundogan further endeared himself to the City faithful by scoring both goals in the 2023 FA Cup final, leading City to a memorable victory over their fierce rivals, Manchester United.

Over the course of the 2023/24 season, Gundogan played for Barcelona after joining them from City on a free transfer.

Right now, his future hangs in the balance. Interests have been shown in the German midfielder from England, Saudi Arabia and Spain. But where does his future lie?

Being one of the top earners at Barça, his sale would free up the wage bill to an extent. The arrival of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig also means more competition for Gundogan.

Due to City manager Pep Guardiola’s philosophy and how much he improved Gundogan, City fans may fancy the midfielder’s return. The German is 33 (turns 34 in October) but he doesn’t look worn out yet.

Meanwhile, according to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Guardiola has already approved Gundogan’s return to Manchester City. With City competing on different fronts this season, the Spanish manager will need enough manpower.

Given his crucial contributions and ability to deliver when it mattered most, City fans will definitely look forward to having the midfield maestro back at the Etihad.

His legacy is undeniable and a return to his former club will most likely complete the circle for this understated hero.
