Argentina, who are both Copa América defending champions and World Cup holders hit the ground running on Friday morning.
After a goalless first half, Albiceleste made their dominance count with two second-half-goals by Álvarez and Martínez.
Canada created a few chances in the first half, however it was Lionel Scaloni’s side that came closest to having the breakthrough when Angel di Maria fluffed his line after left one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He had raced all the way from midfield but fumbled when it mattered most.
Argentina took the lead four minutes into the second-half when Lionel Messi found Alexis Mac Allister with a superb pass. The Liverpool player then sent it the way of Álvarez who slotted in the ball.
In the 64th minute, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium went wild after a very shocking miss by Messi. The Inter Miami forward’s effort looked destined to be a goal but somewhere missed the target.
Canada fought for an important equaliser but could not break down the solid Argentine defence. The introduction of experienced centre-back Nicolas Otamendi made it even more difficult for the Canadians to break through.
Substitute Martínez then sealed the victory after receiving a pass from Messi in the 88th. The Inter Milan striker had replaced Manchester City forward and earlier goalscorer Álvarez.
For this year’s Copa América, 10 CONMEBOL members are featuring with six CONCACAF teams also involved. This makes a total of 16 teams participating in this year’s competition.
