Historical events that happened today you should know


Today in history bore so many events but for your reading, we bring to you top 5. August 19 in different decades and centuries had events that still have effect till this day. But what good is a day if it doesn’t have a happenings to make it memorable.

1692- Salem Witch Trails, four loses their lives due to accusation

George Jacobs Sr., Martha Carrier, George Burroughs, John Willard and John Proctor are hanged on Gallows Hill. Elizabeth Proctor is not hanged because she is pregnant.On August 19, 1692, five people were hung in Salem, Massachusetts for the crime of witchcraft. The five, one woman and four men, were Martha Carrier, George Burroughs, John Willard, George Jacobes and John Proctor.Ā  These five were caught up in the hysteria caused an unusual afflication of young women in the town.

1883- Legendary fashion designer, Gabrielle Coco Chanel was born today

Coco Chanel was born in August 19, 1883, Saumur, Franceā€”died January 10, 1971, Paris). She was a French fashion designer who ruled Parisian haute couture for almost six decades. She revolutionised the black colour to create elegant casual designs to inspire women to abandon the complicated, uncomfortable clothes like petticoats and corsets. These were prevalent in early 20th-century dress. Among her now-classic innovations were the Chanel suit, the quilted purse, costume jewelry, and the ā€œlittle black dress.ā€ She also was known for the iconic perfume Chanel No. 5 in 1921 which was a combination of jasmine and other floral scents. Gabrielle was the first major fashion designer to introduce perfume additionally in intricate bottle design.

1912-The Nigerian Civil Service was formed

The Nigeria Civil Service Union was founded by 33 Civil Servants cutting across all cadre. It was founded by the colonial masters in 1912 but it is criticized to be restricted and classified. The indigenes were given menial jobs while the white job got the adminstrative jobs.

1946- Bill Clinton was born today

William Jefferson Clinton known as Bill Clinton was a former president who served as the 42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. He is an American lawyer and politician who was a member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1983 to 1992.
Clinton, whose policies reflected a centrist “Third Way” political philosophy, became known as a New Democrat.
Bill Clinton is the husband to Hillary Clinton, the party’s nominee in the 2016 presidential election, becoming the first woman to win a presidential nomination by a major U.S. political party and the first woman to win the popular vote for U.S. president. The duo got married in 1975.

2003- Terrorists bombs UN Headquarters in Baghdad

Today, in 2003, the UN Headquarters in Baghdad,Iraq was bombed through a truck bomb. The bombing happened at Canal Hotel which was used as a the United Nations Assistance Mission center. The bombing resulted into 23 among which the victims were the United Nations’ Special Representative in Iraq SĆ©rgio Vieira de Mello, human rights lawyer and political activist Amin Mekki Medani.
Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of terrorist organization Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, in April 2004 claimed responsibility for the 19 August blast.
The unfortunate event led to the withdrawal of over 600 UN members in Iraq. The event and other bombing incident really scarred a lot of people till this day.
