MultiChoice slashes DStv decoder price by 50%, launches free upgrade offer

MultiChoice Nigeria has cut the price of its DStv decoder by half, reducing it from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000 in a move aimed at attracting more customers and addressing a recent decline in subscriptions

In a statement released on Tuesday, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, John Ugbe, explained that the initiative is part of its effort to reward customer loyalty and provide greater value to subscribers.

“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day. The ‘We Got You’ campaign is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans,” he stated.

Ugbe noted that DStv is shifting its focus toward positioning itself as a platform that delivers daily value across various content categories, from sports and drama to kids’ shows and news.

“By repositioning itself as a platform for daily value, DStv aims to encourage content discovery across a wider array of genres, including movies, drama, kids’ programming, and news. This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to tune in every day,” the statement added.

As part of its ongoing promotional campaign, the company is also offering a limited-time deal: customers who pay in full for their current subscription package between June 16 and July 31, 2025, will receive a complimentary upgrade to the next package tier.

MultiChoice explained that both the decoder price slash and the free upgrade offer are in response to the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

These changes follow a sharp drop in user numbers, as the company lost approximately 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025.

The announcement also comes on the heels of three price increases within a year—April 2023, November 2023, and another implemented in May 2024.
