House probes failed $460m Abuja CCTV project

The House of Representatives has set up an adhoc committee to investigate why the $460m CCTV project in Abuja has delivered no security gains despite ongoing loan repayments.

The committee, chaired by Donald Ojogo, will examine how the funds were deployed and why the surveillance system is non-functional as insecurity rises in the capital.

The resolution followed a motion by Amobi Ogah, who said government’s core duty is protection of lives and property.

He recalled that the Jonathan administration approved the CCTV project to monitor criminal activity across the Federal Capital Territory. The contract was awarded to ZTE of China, backed by a Chinese loan signed in 2010.

Ogah said the investment has failed as violence and crime continue despite the system’s supposed surveillance coverage.

He said Nigeria is servicing debt for infrastructure that does not work, describing it as a “lose-lose situation” for the country.
