How men can reduce the risk of getting prostate cancer

Recent news reports circulated widely last week concerning former United States President Joe Biden’s diagnosis of prostate cancer. This announcement seemingly triggered a heightened sense of urgency among men, prompting many to consider and potentially modify habits perceived as increasing their risk of the disease. A significant number of men likely turned to online searches to investigate potential symptoms they might be experiencing.

In Nigeria, prostate cancer constitutes a notable portion of the annual cancer burden, accounting for approximately 14.1% of all diagnosed cancer cases. Statistical data indicates that around 10% of the male population in Nigeria faces the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is recognized as a prevalent health issue affecting men as they age. While it can be life-threatening, effective management can significantly alter its course. Nevertheless, the well-established adage, “prevention is better than a cure,” holds significant relevance.

Things you can do to reduce the risk of getting prostate cancer

Diet plays a crucial role in influencing the likelihood of developing prostate cancer. It is advisable to limit the consumption of foods high in fat and grease. When consuming meat, opting for boiled preparations over fried or grilled methods is recommended. Emphasizing healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids found in nuts, seeds, and fish, is beneficial. Furthermore, increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables is encouraged.

Obesity is associated with an elevated risk of prostate cancer compared to individuals maintaining a healthy weight. Achieving and sustaining a healthy weight is intrinsically linked to dietary choices.

Engaging in regular physical activity offers benefits beyond weight management. Exercise can reduce inflammation, enhance immune system function, and counteract some of the adverse health effects associated with a sedentary lifestyle—all of which can contribute to cancer prevention.

Cessation of smoking yields numerous health improvements, including a reduced risk of cancer. For those who consume alcohol, moderation is advised. Some research suggests that red wine possesses antioxidant properties that may offer health benefits.

Many individuals have insufficient levels of Vitamin D. Adequate Vitamin D intake may offer protection against prostate cancer and various other health conditions. Dietary sources of Vitamin D include cod liver oil, wild salmon, and dried shiitake mushrooms. Given that sunlight is a more accessible source of Vitamin D, many experts recommend approximately 10 minutes of daily sun exposure without sunscreen. Healthcare professionals frequently suggest Vitamin D supplements; however, it is important to consult a doctor before starting any vitamin or supplement regimen.

Preliminary findings from two studies suggest a correlation between higher frequency of ejaculation (with or without a sexual partner) and a potentially lower likelihood of prostate cancer diagnosis, with a reduction of up to two-thirds observed in some cases. While research in this area is ongoing, some experts hypothesize that ejaculation facilitates the removal of toxins and other substances from the body that could contribute to inflammation.
