How my hit song, ‘African Queen’ became both a blessing and curse for me – 2Face

Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Face, has shared that his hit song African Queen gave him both blessings and challenges in his music journey.

He made this known while speaking on a recent episode of the Entertainment & Lifestyle show.

The award-winning artiste explained that while the 2004 classic opened many doors and made him known across the world, it also came with pressures and controversies that have lasted for years.

According to him, the song that lifted him to global fame later became a burden he had to manage.

He said: “African Queen has been a very huge blessing, and e come turn to problem join for me. But I am grateful for everything.”

Released over two decades ago, African Queen made 2Face the first African to win the BET, MTV Europe, and MOBO awards.

The song’s success placed him among Africa’s biggest music exports.

However, its authorship has remained a controversial topic due to claims from his former bandmate, Blackface, who has repeatedly accused him of stealing the song.

2Face had earlier clarified that the song was a joint effort with his former group members, but he denied ever stealing it.

The long-running dispute resurfaced again in August 2025 after Billboard named African Queen the greatest Afrobeats song of all time, sparking renewed discussions about its origin and ownership.
