How popular Nigerian skit makers like Layi got ideas to start comedy

Broda Shaggi, a Nigerian skit maker

With the proliferation of many comedians, skit makers, and TikTokers, the entertainment industry is booming in Nigeria and many young Nigerians are tapping into this market and most importantly carving a niche for themselves in order to stand out in a seemingly saturated market.

A niche is a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service. In other words, it is a segment of the entertainment industry where they know their comedy is going to find solid soil and thrive. It’s basically what makes their comedy unique and remarkable.

From course of study to comedy

Layi Wasabi

Let us begin with Layi Wasabi who studied law and that’s where he got his inspiration from. In an interview with Jermaine Media, Layi said, “I think I started to do that lawyer character more because the persona is not just scripting, I’ve now become that guy lowkey.”

Broda Shaggi

Another comedian and skit maker whose education seemed to have influenced his comedy is Broda Shaggi. He is a graduate of Creative Arts from the University of Lagos, and his father was a drama teacher. This means that he also drew inspiration from his family background and life around him as well. The way he talks in “agbero” voice brought him into the limelight.

Family upbringing and personal experience

Taaooma

Popular comedian, Taaooma, is a typical example here. She must have got her inspiration from her mother. She tells the story of African mothers who discipline kids for everything and anything – with her incessant calling of “Taaoo” and accompanying slaps that mesmerize her audience.

Maraji

Gloria Oloruntobi, popularly known as Maraji, does her comedy skits similar to Taaooma. She started by creating lip-sync videos and imitating songs. In her comedy skits, Maraji does role-playing, switching between accents and vocal tones to fit the characters she portrays.

Other skit makers who drew inspiration and got their ideas from their family background and personal experience are TikTokers @gilmorr1 who does school relatables and @_omo.oba__ who does Mummy GO stuff.

From everyday life around them

Mr Macaroni

Adebowale Adedayo popularly known as Mr Macaroni carved a niche for himself in the Nigerian entertainment industry as the most popular sugar daddy in Nigeria. He is known for the expressions “Ooin, you are doing well” and “Fantabulous”.

Another comedian is Lasisi Elenu, who rants about the typical behaviors of many Nigerians. Also, Kie Kie fits into this category because of her funny Yoruba intonation and sharp mouth that always gets her into trouble.

In a way, comic skit maker, Zicsaloma, actor and singer carved his niche by wearing funny female outfits in videos on TikTok and Instagram.

Officer Woos

Another comedian and skit maker is Officer Woos who drew his inspiration from everyday life around him. He mimics police officers, especially those who are stupid enough.

Brainjotter

Brainjotter, another skit maker, came to the limelight by walking around with his shoes in his hands and testing people’s intelligence and patience by refusing to respond to their irrelevant words. He is popular for his “Abeg getat” phrase, and this phrase has been his tagline for a very long time.

Sabinus

Sabinus, also known as Mr Funny is a comedian, actor, and skit maker, mimics a mumu man who wanders aimlessly around the neighborhood and always gets deceived by people, especially young ladies. He also emboldens the character of a man who claims to be what he is not in order to get people’s attention.

This trend has shown that: First, going to school is never a waste and the course one studied in school has a bearing on one’s life later in life; second, up-and-coming comedians and skit makers can draw more inspiration from their personal experience and background or from life around them.
