Husband accompanies Chimamanda Adichie as she receives honorary title

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a critically acclaimed Nigerian author. She is one of the finest writers to have ever come from Nigeria. On 30th December 2022, she was honoured with a chieftaincy title in her hometown of Anambra by the Igwe of Abba.

She received the honour alongside her husband, Ivara Esege. Her new title is “Odeluwa” which makes her Chief Odeluwa of Abba. The title can be translated as, “The one who writes for the world.”

Earlier this year, Chimamanda rejected the national honour awarded to her by President Buhari. It seems she was closely following in the footsteps of Soyinka and Achebe who had rejected national awards previously.

The presidency said the honour was in recognition of the awardees’ accomplishments in their fields and capacities. Nevertheless, Chimamanda rejected the award. However, she did this privately and no reason was given for her decision.

Equally, Achebe rejected two national honours citing gross mishandling of country affairs. Wole Soyinka, on the other hand, rejected his award because he couldn’t share the same national recognition as Abacha, who he described as a murderer and thief.

In the past, Chimamanda has shared her criticisms of the current government. Her act of defiance could be seen as a response to the government’s indifference regarding issues of national interest.

On the whole, writers are tasked with the responsibility of calling out injustice and bringing truth to power. With this award, it is obvious that Ms Adichie has paid her dues.
