Hushpuppi, a popular Instagram celebrity thrived on living a flamboyant lifestyle. His demeanor characterised by a sheer desire to exhibit wealth, strikes his audience with some unassuming perceptions and conclusions.
For some of his followers, Ramon Igbalode Abbas, aka Hushpuppi, is a young man who amassed wealth through means that were questionable. Whilst the other group agree with the urge to get rich quickly and, would rather die trying if it demands.
The flamboyant display of the Instagram celebrity made some folks to ask God “when”. “When” is a typical gesture to question the Almighty for His delay of their blessings.
Anyways, these desires to get rich are legit. However, it is the individual they look up to in order to get such wealth that should be tracked.
Firstly, Hushpuppi has no track record of his wealth. Without trying to be too sentimental, every individual with such wealth must have a trace. His source of livelihood must be questioned. And hey, it is not jealousy or envy. It is just what it is. We have never questioned the source of the wealth of the likes of Dangote, Adenuga or even Otedola. Nevertheless, their sources of wealth stares to us in the face.

Secondly, there is this set of people who say that everyone has a sin. Hence, we should all do eyes-right in Hushpuppi’s case. Oh wow! Really? Well, I am not surprised at all. It is pertinent to note that Hushpuppi scammed about two million individuals.
In currency, he has successfully gotten millions of dollars to himself and because everyone is not a saint is not a perimeter to support crime. Hushpuppi appeared guilty before he was arrested by Interpol and no one is condemning the individual, but the crime in itself.
Because everyone is not a saint is not a perimeter to support crime.
Internet fraud should not be seen as a normal thing. Funny enough, some persons have come to compare Hushpuppi with the Nigerian government. On that note, I would analyse my third point.
We all know that Nigeria as a nation is rooted in so many challenges. Enough cannot be said of the intermittent power supply despite the billions that has been pumped into the power sector. Same can be said of the rot in the education sector where students now see it as a norm to stay home for months due to the incessant strikes by tutors in our academic institutions.
Consequently, some of these students get discouraged and fashion out other ways to succeed in life. These ways, however, may not be morally suitable for these youths. When the desperation to make it big in life sets into an individual, morality takes the back seat.
Hushpuppi is a typical example of a Nigerian youth who sacrificed his morality on the altar of greed and selfish desires. In his case, morality did not take the back seat of his life. It practically left him, carrying the seat along.
It is no news that Nigeria is suffering from bad leadership. Also, we have other numerous issues travailing our country. For that, it gives us more reasons to look critically into the sources of Nigeria’s unending problems which lies majorly on the people.
Hushpuppi should never be exonerated of his crime just because we have ongoing corruption issues as well as corporate and political theft plaguing our nation.
Let’s analyze this situation critically. In the Police sector, people may want to say that the senior policemen are more corrupt and untrustworthy. But what do you think of the junior police officers who avert justice.

What about those trigger-happy police officers who have killed innocent citizens because they feel they have power in their hands. No claim should be made for any junior worker in any sector. These people, if not criticised, will rise to the top to continue their corrupt practices.
Enough cannot be said about the crimes of Hushpuppi. Nevertheless, let’s look into four lessons to learn from his life.
1. His Act Stains The Country’s Image
According to the Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Hushpuppi has contributed to spoiling the image of the country in the outside world.
No wonder some other nations look at us only from this tainted prism of fraud, simply because of the crimes often committed by a few percentage of Nigerians both at home and abroad. However, it does not take away the fact that Nigerians are hardworking people who are honest in seeking for financial strength. We are not oblivious of the bad eggs. Still, it is not a right to join the bandwagon.
2. He Suffers Low Self Esteem
The UK’s Daily Mail reported that Hushpuppi formerly sold second hand clothes in Nigeria before he joined internet fraud. Moreso, his father was also a taxi driver and he’s previously boasted that he’s the only one that has escaped from poverty in his entire family.
Hushpuppi was probably one of those youths who know nothing about dignity in labor. He had a source of income. However, he felt it was too low for him. Perhaps, he was being bullied into making riches, fast. He listened to that voice and got his hands soiled in crime.
The moral decadence in our society should not be given any room to thrive, however the reasons. Ramon Igbalode Abbas was probably influenced by his peers. Nevertheless, he was nabbed for his crime. This is a feat for justice.
3. Greed Was His Trademark
Hushpuppi was in the game for years. He made massive wealth from scamming people. But he was never satisfied. Even after making so much money to last him many years, he still could not stop. He wore his greed like a badge of honour. And dishonour, he got at the end.
4. Crime Does not Pay, Hard Work & Patience Does
While some persons may be desiring to toe the path of Hushpuppi (many persons are still into the act), it is worthy to note that crime is never the surest way to success.
Everything that Hushpuppi “laboured” for has gone down the drain. He is expected to serve many years in prison. With an expected jail term of twenty years, Hushpuppi is bound to start life afresh when he finally regains his freedom.
In conclusion, while we may want to cut Hushpuppi some slack for his crimes, let us note that there are many persons who were inspired by his flamboyant lifestyle. Hence, some were inspired into going to cyber crime.
Others were cheerleaders who could not wait to like or love his social media posts. They never bothered for once to care about how dirty his source of wealth was but found inspiration in his flamboyant lifestyle because of their own skewed moral compass.
We cannot sound this warning enough into the ears of our youths. But for those who would listen, we would continue to say that crime does not pay. Hushpuppi is just one out of a million cases. Even with his extradition to the United States by the Dubai Police, many persons still desire to be a Hushpuppi.
