Award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has shared personal insight into her own relationship while encouraging young women to be deliberate about their choice of a life partner.
Speaking during her ongoing book tour in Nigeria, the Dream Count author warned women against rushing into marriage out of pressure or desperation. She advised that the decision of who to marry should be made with clarity and self-worth in mind.
“It’s so important for a woman to have what she does, for a woman to have her own… Just a sense of self-fulfilment, have something that you’re doing, it doesn’t matter what it is, and do it well,” she said.
Emphasising the long-term impact of such decisions, she continued:
“It’s really important who you choose. Young women, choose wisely.”

She added that many women sometimes recognise red flags in their partners but ignore them in the name of securing a relationship or marriage.
“Sometimes as young women, you can tell that the person you’re with is not really a good person, but you’re desperate to get married, you’re desperate to have somebody who is your partner.
“Don’t settle. Be very careful who you choose. The person you choose as your life partner will make a huge difference in your life. If you choose somebody who is kind, somebody who is supportive, it will make all of the difference.”
Reflecting on her own experience, the literary icon proudly declared:
“And so I tell you that I chose well. There are some good men left.”
