I smoke, pray before going on stage to perform – Rema

Nigerian Afrobeats star, Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, has shared insight into what he does before stepping on stage.

The singer made the revelation during a chat with Dazed at the Milan Fashion Week, where he walked the runway for Diesel.

Speaking about how he prepares for his performances, Rema disclosed that he combines relaxation, spiritual grounding, and technical preparation before facing his audience.

According to him, his routine includes drinking alcohol, smoking, praying, and coordinating with his team to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“A little Tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” he stated when asked about his pre-show rituals.

“performing has a lot to do with your breathwork and you have to keep the crowd going,” he said.

On his current musical influences, the artist revealed that he has recently been drawn to Sudanese cultural live music.

“I have been listening to a lot of Sudanese cultural live music,” he noted.

The award-winning performer further admitted that cigarette smoking remains his “biggest vice.”
