Nigerian singer Spyro has opened up about a challenging phase in his career when he was urged by people within the music industry to alter his brand and tone down his public display of faith.
In a recent interview, the “Who’s Your Guy” hitmaker recalled that this happened shortly after he left his former record label in 2019 to pursue his solo career.
According to him, the journey was difficult. Without any financial backing, he had to take loans from the bank and borrow from friends to promote his music. His only resources, he said, were his determination, hard work, and unwavering faith in God.

However, not everyone around him approved of the image he was projecting. Spyro revealed that some members of his team advised him to reduce his emphasis on Christianity, warning it might hurt his chances in the industry.
“They told me to tone down my ‘Jesus Boy’ image, that it might scare away some opportunities and limit my growth,” he recalled.
One suggestion, he said, was to remove ‘Christ Ambassador’ from his social media profile.
“I remember telling them that I would rather die than remove Jesus from my profile. I understood their point, but I could not change who I am or hide my faith,” Spyro said.
When he declined, someone proposed replacing it with ‘Child of God’ as a softer alternative. But Spyro refused, insisting that keeping the name of Jesus in his profile would open the right doors for him.
Years later, he said, the same people who once doubted his approach have reached out to commend him.
“One of them told me recently, ‘A lot of artistes are suffering now, no deals, no shows but you are in a good place, and I am proud of you,’” the singer said.
